The PEPT Judiciary Proceedings: A Showdown of Learned Silks and Legal Drama

The courtroom was abuzz with anticipation as the much-awaited Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) proceedings kicked off. Lawyers, known as “Learned Silks,” representing various parties, were poised for a fierce legal battle. All eyes were on the judiciary as they prepared to adjudicate the defence of prominent figures, Tinubu and Shettima.

The air crackled with excitement as Lead Counsels, including SAN Livy Uzoukwu for Labour Party, SAN AB Mahmoud for INEC, SAN Wole Olanipekun for Tinubu and Shettima, and SAN LO Fagbemi for APC took their positions, ready to “put it” to each other.

Tendering Evidence: A Delicate Dance

The courtroom drama began with Olanipekun tendering 18 documents, including a letter from the US Embassy allegedly signed by former IGP Tafa Balogun and received by Micheal Omar. As the documents were admitted into evidence, Justice Tsammani presided over the process, ensuring due diligence.

One of the highlights was the admission of Tinubu’s University Certificate from Chicago State University, tagged as RA10. The defence continued by presenting Tinubu’s Nigerian Passport and data page, along with a US Visa issued in February 2011.

Amidst the occasional lighter note, the defence deftly presented several crucial documents, including the submission of the 2nd petitioner’s membership registration letter and the Certified True Copy of the Committee on the location of the Federal Capital of Nigeria’s report.

Witness Testimony: A Senate Majority Leader Takes the Stand

The courtroom’s attention shifted to Senator Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele, who arrived in a navy blue suit and a rather notable head. This new Senate Majority Leader would be the star witness. He confidently adopted his statement and testified about the ECOWAS Observation Report, signed by former President of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma.

As the examination continued, APC counsel brought some humour to the proceedings by inquiring about Bamidele’s American Bar membership papers. The courtroom erupted in laughter as confusion ensued, with the judge questioning the authenticity of the submitted documents.

The Closing Argument: A Surprising Turn of Events

In a surprising twist, the defence chose to close its case without calling any further witnesses. SAN Livy Uzoukwu seized the opportunity to jest and suggested that more witnesses were needed to “damage the case further.” The judges were amused, showing the camaraderie amidst the intense legal contest.

Justice Tsammani announced the timelines for the filing of written addresses, signalling the next phase of this high-stakes judicial saga. The nation awaits the outcome, with all eyes on the judiciary to render a fair and impartial decision.

As the courtroom clears, one can’t help but appreciate the meticulous dance of “Learned Silks” presenting evidence and witness testimonies. The PEPT continues to captivate the nation, reminding us all of the importance of a robust and transparent judicial system in upholding the rule of law and preserving the democratic fabric of Nigeria.
