Republic of Ireland coach, Vera Pauw says they will leave the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup with their heads high following a battling 0-0 draw against Nigeria.
The Girls in Green put up an impressive display against the nine-time African champions at the Brisbane Stadium on Monday.
The European champions have nothing but pride to play for against the Super Falcons having lost their opening two games against Australia and Canada.
Pauw’s side was the better side for most of the game even though they couldn’t breach the Super Falcons’ defence.
The English woman was delighted with the performance against Nigeria and in the previous games.
“It’s a fantastic feeling. We were in control, we’ve created chances. We need to get there to score, we have done that so much better than the early games. I think we can be really proud, we have had equal games against the top 10 nations,” she was quoted by FIFA.com.
“Those players came out as very good players, they come out as world stars. They will get more contracts and opportunities and the next generation can step in.”
It was Ireland’s first appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
