2023 WWC: Lauren James under fire for stepping on Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie

England forward, Lauren James, has come under fire for stepping on Nigeria’s Super Eagles defender Michelle Alozie during both teams’ 2023 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 tie on Monday.

A cross-section of fans on Twitter has reacted to James getting sent off for stepping on Alozie, with some not happy with the Chelsea star’s behaviour, while others urged her to apologise.

The last-16 tie between the Super Falcons and the Lionesses was a goalless stalemate, with the game going to penalties.

England won the shootout 4-2, but James, however, was sent off before the end of the 90 minutes as she was given marching orders in the 87th minute.

The 21-year-old will miss England’s next three matches as a result of the red card.

However, here are some Twitter reactions gathered by Media Talk Africa after James was sent off during England’s tie against Nigeria:

@Am_Blujay, “Lauren James must send a personal apology to this Nigerian player. This is so foul and unprofessional from a player of her caliber.”

@BalonKing001, “I think Lauren James has to publicly apologize to Alozie for allowing her emotions to get over her. A simple apology from her is enough to stop those racisms of a thing.”

@itsleeswhag, “This was not a mistake, Lauren James knew exactly what she was doing.”

@osasuo, “This silly action of @[email protected] forward Lauren James is going to ensure that she doesn’t play any further role in the #FIFAWWC.”

@peterkingdom182, “Typical Chelsea player.”

@MAfc85382476, “There was honestly no need for it, now entering extra time with a player down. Not ideal

@V0ice_OfReason7. “The way the ref explained it to the whole stadium needs to be brought into the men’s game – the fans need transparency with VAR

@abdoulyeroo, “Very arrogant of her… Very Silly and Unnecessary thing to do! She deserved that red card!”

@MinhajL88844, “Big headed. It runs in the family.”
