The Government of Niger State, located in the North Central region of Nigeria, is calling for more assistance to meet the needs of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the State.
During a working visit to the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mustapha Habib, in Abuja, the Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba made a plea for support.
Garba acknowledged the continuous relief support provided by NEMA, but emphasized the need for additional resources to meet the basic needs of the displaced persons, as banditry has forced approximately 5,000 individuals to flee their homes in the state.
In addition, the purpose of the visit was to discuss strategies for collaboration between the State Government and the Agency to mitigate the potential impact of flooding, as indicated by the 2023 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook.
In response, NEMA’s Director General, Mustapha Ahmed, assured of the Agency’s ongoing support to individuals affected by disasters across the country.
Ahmed commended the Niger State Government for proactively addressing the 2023 flood prediction and emphasized the importance of taking all necessary measures to mitigate the anticipated impact of the disaster.
