The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has made significant strides in clamping down on illegal mining activities in Kwara state, as a total of 80 suspects have been apprehended in the past 10 months.

During a courtesy visit by the Kwara Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development, Mr Abdulquawiy Olododo, the Zonal Commander, Michael Nzekwe, revealed the intelligence-driven operations that led to the discovery and arrest of illegal mining sites across the state.

These operations resulted in the apprehension of 80 individuals involved in illegal mining, accompanied by truckloads of assorted minerals. Nzekwe expressed his concern over the continuous plundering of the state’s resources by these artisanal miners. He emphasized that if these resources were properly guided and utilized, they would be sufficient to sustain and boost the state’s economy.

Kwara state is richly blessed with abundant mineral deposits, spread across its 16 Local Government Areas. With effective harnessing, these resources have the potential to transform the state into a prosperous hub. Nzekwe stressed the importance of collective efforts in combating corruption, particularly in tackling illegal mining activities.

Furthermore, Nzekwe commended Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq for appointing young and dynamic individuals into his cabinet, noting that the choice of Mr. Olododo as the Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development is a step in the right direction towards revitalizing the sector.

Mr. Olododo reiterated the state government’s commitment to collaborate with the EFCC in eradicating the scourge of illegal mining in Kwara state. He expressed the government’s unwavering support for the EFCC’s efforts in curbing unauthorized mining activities and economic crimes.

Highlighting the challenges faced by the EFCC in carrying out its duties, Olododo assured the commission of the state government’s determination to organize and harness the potentials of the mining sector to attract local and foreign investors. He acknowledged the previous commitments made by the EFCC and urged for increased collaboration and synergy among government agencies to achieve the ongoing anti-corruption crusade.

The EFCC’s relentless fight against corruption and illegal mining is a vital step towards preserving the state’s natural resources and ensuring sustainable development. With continued efforts by all stakeholders, Kwara state can be positioned as a model for responsible mining practices and economic growth.
