In a remarkable display of academic excellence, Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State, celebrated the graduation of 283 students with first-class honours during the 2022/2023 academic session. The remarkable achievement was announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun Adebayo, during the institution’s 18th Convocation ceremony and Conferment of First and Higher Degrees. A total of 1,175 students successfully completed their studies during this academic session.
Diverse Achievements and Recognitions
The graduating class comprised 283 students who obtained first-class honours, 656 with second-class upper honours, 214 with second-class lower honours, as well as 22 students who attained third-class honours. Additionally, 204 post-graduate students were among the graduates.
Notably, Nelson Ifechukwu, a student in the Department of Electrical Electronics Engineering, College of Engineering, emerged as the best-graduating student, having achieved an outstanding Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.98.
Impressive Rankings and Distinctions
Speaking at the convocation ceremony, Professor Abiodun Adebayo proudly shared the prestigious rankings achieved by Covenant University. The institution was ranked first in Nigeria, first in West Africa, and seventh in Africa by the Times Higher Education World University and Impact Rankings. With this recognition, Covenant University solidifies its position as the best private university in Nigeria and Africa. Notably, it is the only private university among all Nigerian universities featured in the 2023 ranking.
A Call for Indigenous Solutions
During his address, the Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr David Oyedepo, emphasized the importance of finding home-grown solutions to Africa’s challenges. He highlighted the need for the continent to reclaim its true identity, emphasizing that liberty and dignity are restored through indigenous engagement. Dr Oyedepo firmly advocated for Africa to take responsibility and provide inward solutions to its problems.
Restoring the Dignity of the Black Race
Dr David Abioye, the Pro-Chancellor, lauded the graduating students and encouraged them to start small in their pursuit of success. He emphasized that building personal accomplishments and stability at each stage of their journey is key to future growth. Covenant University is on a mission to restore the dignity of the black race by cultivating a generation of job creators, not just job seekers.
