The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has unveiled the National Spectrum Roadmap 2026-2030, a comprehensive plan aimed at driving the country’s digital future through transparent and predictable spectrum regulation. According to the Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, the initiative is designed to improve the quality of service nationwide by creating a transparent and predictable regulatory environment that supports investment, encourages innovation, and expands access to digital services.
The roadmap includes guidelines for opening the lower 6GHz and 60GHz licence-exempt bands, which are expected to unlock new capacity for high-speed, affordable, and reliable connectivity. Dr. Maida emphasized the importance of spectrum in enabling digital technologies, stating that every video call, online classroom, digital transaction, and connected device in Nigeria relies on spectrum.
The NCC’s move is part of its efforts to prepare Nigeria for future data demands across various sectors, including homes, campuses, businesses, healthcare facilities, and public spaces. The commission is committed to ensuring that spectrum resources serve every community, with the Executive Commissioner for Technical Services, Abraham Oshadami, reaffirming the NCC’s commitment to expanding wireless broadband through foresight, fairness, and national development goals.
Industry stakeholders, including Huawei, have welcomed the roadmap, with Dr. Lola Fafore describing it as a strategic blueprint for Nigeria’s digital future that will drive innovation, boost broadband penetration, and contribute significantly to the country’s GDP. The two-day stakeholders’ consultation forum, which was held in Abuja, provided a platform for discussions on initiatives shaping Nigeria’s digital future.
