The former Governor of Anambra State and Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the upcoming 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has shed light on the critical issue of security in the Southeast region. Obi emphasized the urgent need for unity among leaders in order to effectively address the security crisis.

A Gradual Erosion of Income

Speaking at the Southeast Summit on Economy and Security in Owerri, the capital of Imo state, Obi lamented the devastating impact of criminal activities on the predominantly business-oriented populace of the Southeast. He highlighted how these unlawful activities have steadily eroded the sources of income for the people in the region.

Uniting for Change

In his address, which was aired at the summit, the LP presidential candidate urged Southeast leaders to come together and collectively address the pressing issue of insecurity. Obi stressed the importance of finding a lasting solution to the problem in order to restore peace and stability in the region.

“This summit, which focuses on security and its economic impact on the Southeast, comes at a pivotal time. It is imperative that we unite as a people and pool our expertise to tackle the issue of insecurity within our homeland,” Obi said.

Recognizing that business and economic activities cannot thrive in an environment plagued by insecurity, Obi underscored the need for concerted efforts and mutual trust among stakeholders.

“If we collaborate and work in harmony, we will find the solutions that have eluded us thus far,” Obi explained. “I commend the governors of the Southeast for initiating this summit and for their commitment to collectively address our security challenges.”

A Call to Action

Obi called on participants at the summit, as well as those unable to attend, to actively contribute their ideas and support the initiatives aimed at combating insecurity in the region. He encouraged individuals from all walks of life to engage in meaningful dialogue and play their part in finding effective solutions.

“Let us speak up, share our insights, and actively engage in the actions that will be agreed upon during this summit,” Obi urged. “With God’s guidance, wisdom, strength, and courage, we can take the necessary steps to bring an end to insecurity in our homeland. This will allow us to continue harnessing our God-given talents and resources to restore peace and tranquility in the Southeast, and indeed, our beloved nation, Nigeria.”
