Varsity dean killed in auto crash in Bayelsa

The Dean of Student Affairs at Bayelsa State-owned Niger Delta University, NDU, Dr Ayasen Kemeakigha, was reportedly burnt to death in a lone car accident.

Media Talk Africa, gathered that the accident that took the life of the Ekeremor-born academic occurred on Saturday afternoon along the popular Tombia Amasomma Road while he was on his way from the institution to Yenagoa, the capital of the state.

When Media Talk Africa visited the Amassoma campus of the institution and the scene of the accident, people were seen gathered in clusters discussing the tragic incident.

One of the sympathisers at the scene of the accident postulated that from the position of the burning car, it appeared the deceased may have dozed off while driving.

He said: “From the look of things, there was no way or amount of speed the driver was on that this car would get to that point, maybe the driver dozed off and when he realized, he was already full of fear and panic.”

A statement by the Bayelsa State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident and noted that the deceased was the sole occupant of the car.

The statement reads: “On 21st January 2023 at about 14:45 hours policemen responded to a scene of a lone fatal car accident along Tombia-Amassoma Road, Bayelsa State, and discovered that the only occupant in the vehicle, a Toyota Corrolla with Reg. N0. 06H 132 BY was burnt to death.

“Upon inquiries, it was revealed that the deceased was Dr Ayasen Kemeakegha, 55, the Dean of Student Affairs of the Niger Delta University, Amassoma. The corpse has been evacuated to the morgue. Investigation is ongoing.”

As of the time of filing this report, the institution is yet to react to the death of its staff.
