Liberians have taken to the polls today to participate in crucial presidential and parliamentary elections. With a total of nineteen candidates vying for the presidency, the race to replace incumbent leader George Weah has been highly anticipated.
Weah, the former football star, is seeking a second term in office. However, he faces significant competition from two main challengers: former Vice-President Joseph Boakai and businessman Alexander Cummings. Formerly in an alliance of opposition parties, the coalition disbanded due to disagreements regarding the presidential candidate selection process.
Critics of President Weah’s tenure have raised concerns about widespread corruption, despite some advancements in education and improvements in the electricity supply. As part of his campaign promises, Weah has emphasized his commitment to infrastructure development, particularly the construction of new roads. This pledge is particularly relevant during the rainy season, when substantial parts of the country’s transportation network become severed from the capital, Monrovia.
Weah’s rise to power in 2017 garnered significant popular support after two unsuccessful attempts in previous elections. As Liberians head to the polls, all eyes are on the outcome of this closely contested race.
