Reps probe N74.649bn Kaduna Eastern bypass project abandoned since 2017

The House of Representative has mandated its Committee on Works to analyze the discharge and utilisation of funds accepted for development of the Kaduna Eastern Bypass from 2017 to this point

The decision adopted a movement by Rep. Hussaini Jalo (PDP-Kaduna) at plenary, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mr Jalo mentioned the 48-kilometer Kaduna Eastern Bypass was to attach Kaduna metropolis with the Federal Capital Territory and 11 different states.

He defined that contract for the highway was initially awarded in 2002 to an indigenous agency at the price of N16 billion, however was abandoned.

The Rep member mentioned that the Federal Government reactivated the project in 2017 and upscaled the price to N38.19 billion, with a completion deadline of 2021.

He added that in 2019, the Federal Executive Council accepted N36.459 billion as augmentation to the sooner price for the contract, thereby bringing the overall price to N74.649 billion.

Mr Jalo mentioned that after the prepare assault of March 2022, the contractor suspended work on the primary part of the highway citing safety threats.

He mentioned in spite the large funds devoted to the development of the highway and enchancment of safety within the space, the project has remained abandoned.

He urged the House to analyze the matter and immediate the Federal Ministry of Works to make sure completion of the Kaduna Eastern bypass project.

The House mandated its works committee to make sure that all elements irritating the completion of the project have been resolved and the project accomplished throughout the shortest time.

The committee was given six weeks to report again to the House for additional legislative motion.
