In a remarkable move to empower and support indigent students in Jigawa State, the government has recently given its approval for a significant increase of 100% in scholarship allowances. This development, which aims to alleviate the financial burden faced by these students, was announced by the Commissioner for Information, Youths, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa, in a statement released on Thursday in Dutse.
The State Executive Council, in its pursuit of educational excellence and inclusivity, has decided to implement this upward review of scholarship allowances for Jigawa State indigene students studying at both state and federal tertiary institutions nationwide. The increased allowances will cover not only tuition fees but also maintenance expenses, providing much-needed relief to students and their families.
Furthermore, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance access to quality education, the council has also approved the commencement of bursary payments starting from the forthcoming session in November 2023. This move is a testament to the government’s commitment to supporting students throughout their academic journey and ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder their pursuit of knowledge and a brighter future.
Additionally, the State Executive Council has prioritized the deployment of qualified graduates in the education sector. A total of 1,973 graduates from the state Ministry of Basic Education will be deployed to the Ministry of Higher Education, where they will be assigned to various schools across the state. This strategic decision not only harnesses the potential of these graduates but also addresses the need for skilled educators in the education system. The projected monthly salary cost for this commendable initiative is estimated at N212.315 million.
In an effort to bolster the teaching workforce, the council has also granted approval for the absorption of 3,000 National Certificate of Education (NCE) holders under the state’s J-Teach program into full-time employment. The J-Teach program, initiated by the government, seeks to recruit both university and NCE graduates on a temporary basis to teach in schools across the state. This move not only creates employment opportunities for these graduates but also enhances the quality of education delivered to students. The projected monthly salary for the absorbed NCE holders is estimated at N161.964 million.
With these progressive measures aimed at empowering students and strengthening the education sector, the Jigawa State government has once again demonstrated its commitment to the welfare and development of its citizens. This commendable initiative will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the lives of indigent students, providing them with the necessary support and encouragement to excel academically and contribute meaningfully to the growth and progress of the state.
