The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing affordable housing and addressing the housing deficit faced by public servants. This announcement was made by Folashade Yemi-Esan, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, during the groundbreaking ceremony for 116 housing units under the Federal Integrated Staff Housing (FISH) Programme in the Federal Capital Territory. Established in 2015, the FISH programme is a welfare initiative designed to offer quality and affordable housing for civil servants by facilitating loan and mortgage options at a single interest rate.
Despite facing some controversy, Yemi-Esan emphasized that the programme is well-suited to meet the housing needs of public officers. She highlighted that the new site, which spans 5 hectares, is located in a prime area. Yemi-Esan also pointed out the importance of civil servants as essential contributors to national development, asserting that their housing welfare deserves special attention. She remarked, “This groundbreaking event is a watershed moment in accelerating the attainment of the government’s agenda of ensuring the welfare of civil servants through the provision of affordable housing.”
Furthermore, she explained that the FISH programme was conceived as a solution to the housing deficit experienced by civil servants, a situation that arose from the monetization policy that led to the sale of government quarters across the country. In addition, the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, outlined various policy initiatives being implemented by the current administration, which aim to enhance the welfare of civil and public servants in Nigeria, thereby enabling them to perform their duties more effectively.
