The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has received a recommendation from the leader of the Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church of Nigeria, Prophet Adegboyega Alao, regarding the security arrangements for the upcoming general elections. During a press briefing on Monday, which marked the announcement of the church’s annual general conference, Prophet Alao urged the Federal Government to begin withdrawing some security personnel assigned to Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country. He emphasized that these officials should be redeployed to ensure maximum security for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials and facilities during the elections.
Prophet Alao highlighted the urgency of this measure, particularly in light of recent attacks on INEC offices in various regions. He stated, “I want to emphasise that the government must increase the security deployed to protect INEC facilities in all the 774 local governments in the country.” He further insisted that the government should reduce the excessive number of police officers assigned to VIPs, noting that Nigerians would not accept any excuses if INEC offices were attacked again. He firmly declared, “This election must hold.”
Additionally, the cleric expressed concern over the government’s apparent indifference to the nation’s precarious situation, suggesting that officials act as if everything is well. He called on the government to provide clarity regarding the causes of fuel scarcity and the rising pump prices, insisting that Nigerians deserve transparency about whether the subsidy has been removed and the reasons behind the increases in petrol and diesel prices. He lamented that, despite being one of the leading oil-producing countries globally, Nigeria lacks a functioning refinery and spends significant foreign exchange on fuel imports. This situation, he argued, has contributed to inflation and a rising unemployment rate, while the power supply remains inconsistent, hindering factory operations in the country. “Our leaders should know that Nigerians deserve better than this,” he stated.
The church conference, set to commence on Thursday, will focus on the theme “Leadership: Opportunity Leading with Responsibility.” Prophet Alao indicated that this event would provide an opportunity for leaders and members to review their activities over the past year and discuss future directions, particularly concerning the nearly completed Moses Orimolade University.
