Supporting Women in Media: Showcasing Talents and Capabilities

In an effort to promote gender equality and empower women in the media industry, Nigerian women have been urged to support and uplift one another. By coming together and showcasing their talents and capabilities, women can pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse media landscape in the country.

This call for support and collaboration was made by Dr. Valda Itunu Martins, a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna. Speaking at the Niger Women in the Media Summit held at the IBB Pen House in Minna, Dr. Martins highlighted the need for mutual understanding and cooperation between male and female journalists.

In her paper titled ‘The Role of the Media in Promoting Gender Mainstreaming’, Dr. Martins expressed concern over the bias displayed by some media organizations when it comes to gender-related issues. She emphasized the importance of women encouraging and inspiring one another, regardless of the challenges they face.

“It is time for women to start encouraging one another and not to give up no matter the odds against us. Let us also strive to be role models to upcoming practitioners,” urged Dr. Martins.

Recognizing the obstacles faced by women journalists, the Summit’s convener, Ms. Justina Asishana, highlighted the need to empower women and expose them to the challenges they may encounter in their profession. The Summit, themed ‘Empowering Women Journalists for Inclusive Reporting and Leadership’, aimed to encourage women journalists to reach new heights in their careers.

“The media industry, like many others, has often been male-dominated, with limited avenues for women to showcase their talents and capabilities,” said Ms. Asishana.

She further added, “This Summit aims to address this disparity and create an empowering space for women journalists to thrive. Moreover, there is an undeniable gap in the mainstreaming of gender in media. Our stories, our perspectives, and our experiences often find themselves relegated to the sidelines. It is high time we change this narrative by ensuring that gender is not just a category but an integral part of every story. We can create a more balanced and representative media landscape.”

The call to support and uplift women in the media industry resonates with the global movement towards greater gender equality. By embracing diversity and providing equal opportunities, the media industry can benefit from a wider range of perspectives and insights.

Women in the media have proven time and again their capabilities in playing complementary roles to men, contributing to the growth and development of the country. It is essential to recognize and appreciate their talents and provide them with the space they deserve to thrive and succeed.

Through collaboration, mentorship, and a collective effort to challenge existing norms, women in the media can create a more inclusive and representative industry. It is time to break down barriers, support one another, and showcase the incredible talents and capabilities that Nigerian women bring to the table.
