New data indicates a significant increase in mobile app releases, challenging earlier predictions that artificial intelligence would make traditional apps obsolete. According to market intelligence provider Appfigures, worldwide app launches in the first quarter of 2026 rose by 60% year-over-year across both Apple’s App Store and Google Play. Notably, the growth on iOS was even more pronounced, reaching 80%. In April 2026, total app releases across both platforms surged by 104% compared to the same month the previous year, with iOS experiencing an 89% increase. These findings come in the context of prior speculation that AI chatbots and agents might lead users to abandon apps entirely.
Industry figures, including Nothing CEO Carl Pei, have advocated for an AI-driven future with fewer dependencies on apps. Additionally, discussions have emerged regarding the potential for new computing platforms, such as smart glasses or AI-enhanced wearables, to replace smartphones. OpenAI’s collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive on an AI hardware device has further fueled these conversations. However, the recent surge in app releases suggests a different trend. AI-powered development tools like Claude Code and Replit appear to be lowering technical barriers, allowing individuals without coding expertise to create their own mobile applications. This trend may signal the onset of a new wave of innovation driven by creators who possess ideas but lack technical skills.
Appfigures’ data reveals that mobile games continue to dominate new launches globally, but other categories are also experiencing rapid growth. For the first time this year, “productivity” apps have entered the top five, while “utilities” have climbed to second place and “lifestyle” apps have moved up to third. “Health and fitness” applications round out the top five. The influx of new submissions may help explain recent missteps by Apple in its app review process. This week, the company removed the rewards app Freecash after it reached the top five on the App Store charts. Additionally, a malicious clone of the Ledger Live cryptocurrency app managed to slip through the cracks, resulting in the theft of $8.5 million from victims’ accounts.
Apple has reported blocking or removing over 17,000 apps for bait-and-switch violations in 2024, rejecting more than 320,000 spam or misleading submissions, and preventing over 37,000 potentially fraudulent apps from reaching users. Despite these efforts, some analysts argue that the company needs to implement stronger proactive screening measures to catch fraudulent or high-grossing apps before they gain traction. If AI-assisted development is indeed driving the current surge in app releases, the necessity for vigilant oversight will only increase as more new apps enter the marketplace.
