Bill to Establish Technology Institute in Zamfara Gains Momentum in House of Representatives

A bill aimed at establishing a Federal Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship in Bungudu, Zamfara State, has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives on Thursday. The bill, sponsored by Hon Abdulmalik Zubairu Bungudu, representing Bungudu/Maru Federal Constituency of Zamfara State, seeks an amendment to the Federal Polytechnic Act, 2004 to enable the institute to offer courses in technology and entrepreneurship.

During the debate on the bill, Hon Bungudu emphasized the importance of repositioning the institution through this amendment, allowing graduates to become more enterprising and equipped to address the economic challenges of the time. He stated, “This bill aims to establish the Federal Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship in Bungudu, Zamfara State, with the purpose of identifying and providing solutions to Nigeria’s technological and entrepreneurial needs within the context of national economic development.”

Highlighting the pressing issue of unemployment among graduates, Hon Bungudu stressed the need for individuals to be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to create their own jobs and contribute to wealth creation. He further elucidated the dire circumstances in Zamfara, where citizens, predominantly farmers, are unable to access their farmlands due to rampant banditry activities. This situation calls for the urgent establishment of the institute to empower individuals who depend on agriculture as their main source of income.

Recognizing the significance of the bill in generating self-employed graduates, the House of Representatives expressed overwhelming support and consensus for its passage during the contributions made by lawmakers. The Speaker, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, commended the bill’s sponsor and reaffirmed the commitment of the House to promote economic interests and empower Nigerians. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Tertiary Institutions, which has been given a two-week deadline to report back to the Committee of the Whole.

The proposed establishment of the Federal Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship in Zamfara State holds great promise for the future of the state and the nation as a whole. It is a significant step in addressing the unemployment crisis among graduates and creating a conducive environment for innovation and economic growth.
