Nigeria’s Power Minister Emphasizes the Urgent Need for Gas and Infrastructure Expansion to Meet Growing Demands

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has highlighted the pressing need for Nigeria to invest in substantial additional gas, generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure in order to meet the rising electricity demands of the country. This important statement was made during his address at the 2nd Domestic Gas and Gas Infrastructure Summit 2023, organized by the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) in Abuja.

Despite being a major global producer of gas and possessing one of the largest gas reserves in the world, Nigeria has been grappling with delivering sufficient gas to the domestic market as the demand continues to grow. Minister Adelabu emphasized the critical importance of addressing this issue to ensure the nation’s energy needs are adequately met.

As Nigeria’s population continues to expand, it becomes increasingly crucial to invest in gas, generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure to keep up with the escalating electricity demands. Minister Adelabu also highlighted the potential for gas-to-power and renewable energy sources to provide the much-needed generation capacity.

Presently, Nigeria has an installed electric power capacity of over 12,522 Megawatts from existing plants. However, the available dispatchable capacity stands at a mere 4,000 MW, demonstrating the urgent need for expansion and improvement in the country’s power infrastructure.

The development and implementation of robust gas and infrastructure projects will play a pivotal role in ensuring a reliable and sustainable supply of electricity to Nigerian homes and businesses. This investment will not only enhance the overall quality of life for citizens but also support the economic growth and development of the nation.

The Nigerian government, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, must prioritize these infrastructure projects and provide the necessary support and funding to ensure their successful completion. By doing so, Nigeria can overcome the challenges of inadequate power supply and move towards a future powered by clean energy and efficient electricity distribution.
