Elections: FRSC cautions convoy drivers against recklessness

As political activities intensify nationwide in the lead-up to the 2023 general elections, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a warning to convoy drivers regarding reckless driving and speeding. The FRSC Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, conveyed this message in a statement released on Tuesday, which was signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem. In response to a series of accidents involving political party convoys since the start of the election campaigns, Biu emphasized that the loss of lives could be prevented if drivers adhered to established road traffic regulations.

Notably, in December 2022, four individuals lost their lives in a tragic accident involving a Toyota Hilux carrying a detachment of vigilantes accompanying Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State en route to Mubi for a campaign event. Similarly, in July of the previous year, four members of the New Nigeria Political Party in Niger State died in a horrific motor accident when their NNPP-branded vehicle collided with a stationary truck between Lambata and Lapai.

Expressing his dissatisfaction with the behavior of convoy drivers, the Corps Marshal pointed out that despite repeated warnings and appeals from the FRSC, many drivers continue to violate established laws, exceed speed limits, and engage in reckless driving practices that contradict safe road use. While acknowledging the orderly conduct of some motorists who adhered to road traffic rules during their political engagements, Biu reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to ensuring safe and efficient movement for both vehicles and pedestrians. He announced that commanding officers have been instructed to enhance the visibility of patrol teams in strategically identified locations.

To further address potential traffic gridlocks resulting from the upcoming political activities, the FRSC has implemented several measures, including the deployment of additional operational vehicles and manpower. These efforts aim to manage the anticipated increase in traffic and promote safety on the roads during this critical period.
