The Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Ali Ndume, has called upon President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action by signing an Executive Order aimed at confiscating unexplained wealth within the country. Ndume, in an interview with Channels TV on Sunday, expressed his deep concern over the prevalence of unexplained wealth, particularly among politicians and civil servants, emphasizing the urgent need for legislative measures to combat this issue.
The Senate Chief Whip revealed that his attempts to introduce legislation on this matter at the upper chamber had unfortunately been discarded. However, he believes that the most effective approach would be for the executive arm of government to present a bill addressing unexplained wealth or for the current president to sign an executive order to that effect.
“I have made several attempts,” Ndume commented, “but there were always excuses and delays. I believe the best solution would be for the bill to come directly from the executive, or in the meantime, the current president should sign an executive bill on unexplained wealth.”
During the discourse, Ndume also shed light on the circumstances surrounding his recent departure from the chamber, clarifying that his encounter with the Senate President had been misconstrued and exaggerated.
“I want to clarify that the situation was blown out of proportion,” he explained. “The issue lies in the way it was handled, and there was a misunderstanding. I want to emphasize that I campaigned for Akpabio and have always been a supporter. One does not build a house only to tear it down.”
Ndume further elucidated on the matter, pointing out his experience and asserting his role as the Chief Whip.
“The problem is that I am more experienced than him,” he stated. “When I tried to correct him, he should have invited me for a one-on-one discussion rather than exerting his authority with the gavel. It was coincidentally 12:30 pm, and I needed to attend my prayer session.”
The issue of unexplained wealth remains a pressing concern in Nigeria, as it perpetuates corruption and hampers the nation’s progress. Ali Ndume’s call for the implementation of an executive order to address this issue reflects the collective desire for greater transparency and accountability in the country’s governance.
By seizing the opportunity to enact legislation and take decisive action, President Bola Tinubu can demonstrate his commitment to combating corruption and ensuring a fairer and more just society for all Nigerians.
