Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has expressed deep concern over the current state of education and welfare in the state.

During a recent visit to an Approved School, established as a correctional centre for the reform of delinquent behaviour in underage children, Governor Lawal expressed dismay at the deplorable conditions. He attributed the neglect of the school system to the apathy of the previous administration and condemned the unsanitary environment of the institution.

Lawal described the foul odour emanating from the students’ hostel, the dilapidated school infrastructure including broken windows, cracked walls, and deteriorating floors. He noted with disapproval that some students were sleeping on worn-out mattresses.

Visibly disturbed by the state of the school, the Governor conducted an extensive inspection of the kitchen, empty workshop halls, and other sections of the facility.

“I have come to see for myself the condition of this place, but what I have seen so far is disheartening. I cannot even put it into words,” expressed Governor Lawal. “The facility, meant to be a conducive centre for correcting deviant behaviour in children, is in a state that is not even suitable for animals, let alone human beings.”

He emphasized that no responsible parent would consider bringing their child to such a substandard environment, regardless of the severity of their delinquent behaviour.

The Principal of the school, Sale Muhammad, who accompanied the governor during the tour, highlighted that the school has never had electricity supply from the national grid since its establishment. He also lamented the lack of essential facilities such as a clinic, furniture, and workshop tools for the students’ skill development and self-reliance.

Following the inspection, Governor Dauda issued a directive to the relevant Ministries to ensure the school, including its access road, mosques, and kitchen, is rehabilitated to effectively fulfill its role as a correctional facility for children.
