Julius Ihonvbere, the majority leader of the House of Representatives, expressed his inability to visit his community in the past three months due to the prevalent insecurity and poor road conditions.
Representing Owan federal constituency in Edo State, Ihonvbere disclosed this during an interactive session with civil society organisations and donor agencies on Thursday.
While attempting to defend the members of the National Assembly, Ihonvbere highlighted the impact of insecurity, stating that some members have been unable to visit their communities safely.
He emphasized the dangers posed by kidnappers who exploit the bad road sections to abduct commuters. “There are members that can take a flight from Abuja and land in their constituencies easily. They can go every weekend. But some members have to travel two to five miles. I have not been to my constituency for months. I can’t go. There are no roads and it is not safe. In fact, the bad spots are where kidnappers come and catch you when you stop,” he explained.
The legislator urged civil society organisations to lend their support to the members of the National Assembly in carrying out their duties.
