IGP Confirms: Three Suspects Arrested by Soldiers Are Police Officers

During the recent governorship election in Kogi State, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, verified that three individuals apprehended by soldiers are indeed police officers.

The soldiers, deployed for election duty in Okene, intercepted black security vehicles and detained the occupants on Saturday. These arrests were part of a series made during the election, with most of the detainees suspected to be affiliated with political thuggery.

Addressing this development, the IGP released a statement on Tuesday through the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, acknowledging the nature of the arrests. He expressed gratitude to the officers involved in the Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa State off-circle elections, while affirming his commitment to taking disciplinary action against any officers found to be at fault.

The statement elucidated, “In Kogi State, it has been confirmed that three officers who were arrested by soldiers and handed over to the Police were indeed police personnel but were found to be escorting a VIP contrary to directives.”

It was further stated, “Others who were arrested by election officers escorting VIPs during the polls will also be sanctioned as such actions are against established protocols, and the officers involved will face disciplinary measures as a consequence.”
