The European Union announced that Nigeria, together with other Lake Chad region countries—specifically Niger, Chad and Cameroon—will receive €102.5 million in humanitarian aid. This commitment was made at the third high‑level conference on the Lake Chad Region, held in Niamey on Monday and Tuesday, which sought to build regional and cross‑border consensus on the adjustments needed to address the area’s ongoing challenges.
According to the EU, the funding will target critical issues such as the acute food needs of households and communities affected by conflict, as well as the treatment of severe acute malnutrition in children under five. The Lake Chad region, encompassing far‑west Chad, northeast Nigeria and parts of Niger and Cameroon, has endured persistent conflicts over recent decades, resulting in significant loss of life and the displacement of many individuals.
