Appeal Court Decision Ousts Bauchi Deputy Speaker, Barade

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has made a significant ruling, resulting in the ousting of Jamilu Umaru Dahiru Barade, the Deputy Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

On Monday, a three-man panel of Justices delivered a judgment that nullified the earlier decision of the Bauchi State House of Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal, which had upheld Barade’s position as the duly elected representative for Bauchi Central State Constituency.

Subsequently, the panel called for a rerun of elections in specific polling units within the constituency, following allegations of over-voting by the appellant, Aliyu Abdullahi Ilela, of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The court has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to revoke the Certificate of Return previously presented to the Deputy Speaker and conduct a fresh election in the affected polling units.

Recent events reveal that this judgment comes shortly after the appellate court also removed the Speaker of the House, Abubakar Sulaiman.
