The recently concluded governorship election in Kogi State has stirred controversy, with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Senator Dino Melaye, announcing his decision not to pursue legal action against the alleged electoral malpractices.
In a heartfelt message shared on his Facebook page, Melaye lamented the waning integrity of the judiciary, expressing his lack of confidence in the system’s capability to redress electoral grievances.
Amidst emotive rhetoric, Melaye underscored the precarious state of democracy in the absence of a robust legal framework and a judiciary that exudes courage and impartiality. He opined that a democracy bereft of these essentials is susceptible to decay from within.
“The mandate of INEC is to facilitate periodic, transparent, and legitimate elections and to affirm the collective choice of the electorate through the ballot. However, the tenure of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has witnessed an unsettling trend, wherein election outcomes are predetermined prior to the voting day,” Melaye asserted.
He further explained his resolve not to engage in legal recourse, attributing it to the compromised state of the judiciary and the purported premeditated orchestration of election results by INEC officials under the leadership of Professor Mahmood Yakubu. Melaye did not mince words in condemning Yakubu’s stewardship as the epitome of ineptitude in overseeing Nigeria’s electoral process.
