The apex Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has advised President Bola Tinubu to desist from lamenting the failures of the previous administration, especially considering their shared political affiliation.

Expressing dismay over the “economic hardship” plaguing Nigerians due to skyrocketing prices of commodities and services nationwide, the Ayo Adebanjo faction of the organization conveyed a communiqué to journalists following their general meeting on Tuesday.

The group emphasized the urgent need to stabilize the naira, which has significantly depreciated against other global currencies, as a means to attract the much-needed foreign direct investment.

Highlighting the three-month period between the presidential election results and the inauguration, Afenifere underscored that it provided ample time for the government to unveil its economic strategies.

“Afenifere decried the current excuses for the state of the economy inherited by this government from its predecessor of the same political party and opined that the period of three months between the declaration of the President in February and the inauguration at the end of May was sufficient to lay the foundations for the economic policies of the new administration, whose soothing effects should now be felt by the people,” the group stated.

The Yoruba socio-political group further expressed concern over the free fall of the naira in the foreign exchange market, emphasizing its adverse impact on various facets of citizens’ lives, particularly the exorbitant costs of imported pharmaceutical products. This predicament, they noted, has dire consequences for the health of ordinary Nigerians who cannot afford medical treatment abroad like the country’s leaders.

“Afenifere opined that without stabilising the naira, the much-sought foreign direct investment will continue to be a mirage,” the group added.
