Yobe Assembly Extends Tenure of Local Government Caretaker Chairmen, Reduces University Tenure

The Yobe State House of Assembly has granted a six-month extension to the chairmen and members of the Caretaker Management Committees of the state’s 17 local government areas. This extension comes following a request from the executive arm of government for the confirmation of the re-appointment of the chairmen.

Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, the Leader of the House, emphasized the constitutional empowerment of the House to extend the tenure of the chairmen and members of the caretaker management committee, pending the election of executive chairmen of the local governments in the state. The confirmation of the re-appointment of the chairmen and members was necessary due to the expiration of their initial six-month tenure.

The Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Chiroma Buba Mashio, urged the confirmed re-appointed chairmen to redouble their efforts in delivering more dividends of democracy to the rural populace.

However, this development postpones the earlier scheduled local government elections slated for November 25, dashing the hopes of prompt electoral activities in the local government areas.

In a related development, the House has made amendments to the law that established the Yobe State University, effectively reducing the tenure of the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar, and Chief Librarian of the University. The amendment changes their tenure from two terms of four years to a single term of five years.

Hon. Ishaku Sani Audu, the Chairman of the House committee on higher education, explained that the amendment aligns with international best practices, aiming to enhance the university’s operational standards.
