The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially zoned the vacant governorship seat to Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, the home local government area of the late Prof. Uche Ikonne. This decision comes in the wake of Ikonne’s death on January 25, 2022, and follows the directive from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh primary within 14 days to select a replacement.

The decision was made during a meeting of the Abia PDP State Caucus held on Sunday, as stated by Abraham Amah, the Vice Chairman and Acting State Publicity Secretary of the party. The caucus comprised members from various regions of the state, including Abia North, Ikwuano/Umuahia, Ukwa East, and Ukwa West Local Government Areas. Notable attendees included the State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu; Deputy Governor Dr. Ude Chukwu; former Governor Senator Theodore Orji; and the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Engr. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji. The meeting also featured the two other senatorial candidates of the PDP, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa and Austin Akobundu, along with the statutory members of the Abia PDP State Caucus, except for one member who sent an apology for his absence.

The PDP has urged its members to support the caucus’s decision and work towards a successful primary election scheduled for February 4, 2023. Additionally, the party called on its members to remain vigilant and anticipate further information and briefings from the Publicity Department of the Abia PDP in the near future.
