Former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani, announced on Sunday his decision to support the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Nnamani’s endorsement stems from his belief that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) violated its constitution by denying the southern region the opportunity to produce the next President. He emphasized that the PDP’s constitution mandates the rotation of key political offices between the North and the South to promote equity, justice, and fairness.

In a statement released to journalists in Abuja, Nnamani highlighted the importance of sharing and rotating key political offices among the diverse populations of Nigeria. He pointed out that the PDP constitution clearly states its commitment to the policy of rotation and zoning of both party and public elective offices. Nnamani criticized the PDP leadership for disregarding this constitutional provision, particularly after the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, had pledged to step down if a Northerner emerged as the presidential candidate for the 2023 election.

Nnamani recalled that in 2019, the PDP allowed Northern candidates to contest the presidential primaries in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where Atiku Abubakar secured the ticket. He expressed disappointment that, in 2023, the PDP did not reciprocate by allowing Southern candidates the same opportunity, instead opening the contest to both Northern and Southern aspirants. He concluded by stating that the PDP’s actions represent a significant injustice and a failure to uphold equity, asserting that it would be morally wrong to maintain power in the North following President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure in 2023.
