Nigeria’s National Identity Enrollment Surges to 104.16 Million, Striving Towards World Bank Target

In a significant stride towards universal identification, Nigeria’s National Identity Number (NIN) enrollment has soared to 104.16 million as of the end of 2023, according to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

The latest NIN enrollment data released by NIMC reveals a substantial increase of 10.3 million enrollments in 2023, marking a notable rise from the 94.03 million total enrollments recorded in December 2022.

Noteworthy from the data is the gender distribution among enrollees, with 59.12 million, constituting 56.8% of the total NIN database, being male. On the other hand, female enrollments stand at 45.04 million, representing 43.2% of the total enrollments.

The surge in NIN enrollment coincides with the impending deadline of February 28, 2024, set by mobile network operators for the linkage of Subscribers Identification Modules (SIMs) to NIN. This linkage is a crucial step in bolstering national security and curbing illicit activities enabled by anonymous SIM card usage.

Despite the remarkable progress, Nigeria’s NIN enrollment figures still fall short of the World Bank’s targeted 148 million by June 2024. The disparity underscores the need for sustained efforts and innovative strategies to expedite the enrollment process and achieve comprehensive coverage.

The surge in NIN enrollment not only signifies a pivotal leap towards universal identification but also underscores the nation’s commitment to embracing digital transformation and fortifying security measures. As Nigeria advances its NIN enrollment initiatives, the global community keenly observes its progress, recognizing the pivotal role of comprehensive identification systems in national development and security.
