Renowned Nigerian-American scholar Farooq Kperogi has called upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to dismiss Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, in response to an alleged N585,198,500.00 million corruption scandal.

The controversy revolves around Edu’s approval of a payment totaling N585,198 million into a private account belonging to Bridget Mojisola Oniyelu. Kperogi, in a recent essay, shared his disapproval, emphasizing the need for immediate action. He pointed out that failure to take decisive steps would undermine the government’s anti-corruption efforts.

In his scathing critique, Kperogi highlighted the striking similarities between the alleged actions of Edu and previous instances of malfeasance within the government. He revealed a leaked December 20, 2023 memo instructing the Accountant-General of the Federation to transfer funds intended for vulnerable groups in specific regions into a private UBA account, a clear breach of Nigeria’s financial regulations.

Quoting the relevant regulation, Kperogi emphasized that public funds should never be deposited into private bank accounts. Moreover, he underscored the legal consequences, asserting that such actions are deemed to be fraudulent.

Drawing a parallel with the overarching campaign against corruption, Kperogi cautioned that allowing Edu to remain in her position would tarnish the administration’s integrity. He urged Tinubu to take swift action by removing Edu and holding her accountable for the alleged misconduct.

As this scandal unfolds, the call to address corruption within the government gains prominence, positioning it as a test of the leadership’s commitment to upholding ethical standards.

Amid mounting public scrutiny, the nation eagerly awaits the response from President Tinubu, as the fate of Edu could shape the perception of the administration’s stance on combating corruption.
