The Labour Party has responded to the resignation of Dr. Doyin Okupe, former Campaign Director of its Presidential Campaign Council in the last election. Okupe tendered his resignation from the party on Monday, citing ideological differences that emerged after the 2023 general elections.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, expressed the party’s stance on Okupe’s departure. He highlighted Okupe’s longstanding affiliation with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasizing that Okupe has consistently been aligned with the PDP despite his involvement with the Labour Party.
Ifoh acknowledged Okupe’s significant contributions to the party’s efforts in the last election, despite the party’s defeat by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the presidential level. Ifoh stated, “We wish him very well. We want to say that he is leaving because he is a Liberal Democrat, while the Labour Party is a Social Democrat.”
“It is also a good thing because he is not expected to be in a territory where his ideological bent will be confused or different. He has always been a PDP man, so the Labour Party expects that he will return to anywhere he wants to be,” Ifoh added.
In conclusion, Ifoh extended best wishes to Okupe in his future political pursuits. While the party acknowledged the circulation of Okupe’s resignation letter on social media, they confirmed that they had not received it officially at that time.
