The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned two employees of Encon International Limited, a construction company, in connection with the theft of 40 units of equipment valued at N20 million. The accused, Peter Musa, a security guard, and Friday Iniekem, an accountant, faced three counts of conspiracy and theft before Magistrate O. Y. Adufope at the Yaba Magistrates’ Court.

During the proceedings, police prosecutor Magaji Haruna informed the court that each unit of the stolen equipment weighed 15 kilogrammes, making it unlikely that the theft could occur unnoticed. He noted that the lock on the room where the equipment was stored had not been broken, nor had there been any reports of a break-in or robbery at the company, suggesting that the theft was premeditated. The prosecutor highlighted that the accountant, who possessed the key to the room, and the security guard were implicated in the crime.

Haruna stated that the offences committed by the defendants are punishable under sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2022. The charges specified that between October 2021 and November 2022, at 19 Campbell Street, Lagos Island, the defendants stole 40 units of Speedgate mechanisms, valued at N20 million, which belonged to Lorenzo Anthonio.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. The magistrate granted them bail in the amount of N5 million, with two sureties in a similar sum, and adjourned the case until February 28, 2023.
