Rising Cancer Rates Among Young Adults Spark Global Concern

Health experts at the Niger Delta University have expressed deep concern over the escalating incidence of cancer among young people. Dr. Okeoghene Ifiezibe Akusu emphasized the crucial role of early detection in reducing the mortality rate, highlighting that one in every six individuals succumbs to this disease annually due to delayed diagnosis, resulting in 9.6 million deaths worldwide.

To commemorate World Cancer Day 2024, Dr. Akusu underscored the significance of regular breast cancer screening during an awareness initiative themed “Close the Gap.” He further elucidated that cancer stems from abnormal cell division, leading to dysfunctional body systems when left unchecked.

Addressing possible risk factors, Dr. Kelly Torru and Dr. Daniel Asalagha urged individuals to promptly seek medical attention upon experiencing unusual symptoms. They stressed the importance of breast self-examinations for women, affirming that breastfeeding contributes to reducing the risk of breast cancer.

Global research has associated cancer with various factors, including the use of tobacco, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, exposure to radiation, and unhealthy lifestyles.

The heightened prevalence of cancer among young adults necessitates immediate attention and proactive measures to mitigate its impact worldwide.
