The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council in Rivers State has criticized Governor Nyesom Wike for canceling the approval granted for the party’s presidential campaign in Port Harcourt, the state capital. Dr. Leloonu Nwibubasa, the spokesman for the PDP PCC in Rivers, expressed these sentiments during an interview. He accused the governor of lacking integrity for failing to name his preferred presidential candidate in January, as he had previously promised. Nwibubasa suggested that the governor’s actions indicate increasing frustration.

On Wednesday, the state government officially revoked the approval for the PDP rally, which was scheduled for February 11, 2023. This cancellation was communicated in a letter signed by the state Commissioner for Sports, Christopher Green, and addressed to the Director General of the PDP PCC, Aminu Tambuwal. The letter stated that credible information indicated the PDP PCC was collaborating with a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, led by Tonye Cole. It further noted that the APC’s activities in Rivers have often been associated with violence due to internal conflicts within the party.

The letter emphasized the government’s concern for the safety of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, describing it as a valuable asset that could be damaged due to the collaboration with the APC faction. Consequently, the Rivers State Government made the difficult decision to withdraw the previously granted approval for the stadium’s use.

Nwibubasa confirmed the cancellation and referred to the state government’s earlier approval as a “Greek gift.” He criticized Wike, stating that a good fighter knows when to quit, implying that the governor’s decisions reflect a lack of strategic judgment. Nwibubasa remarked, “We are not surprised when certain decisions are taken because it all amounts to the fact that the level of frustration is increasing.” He urged Wike to return to his party and embrace a path of peace, emphasizing the importance of honor in political conduct.

Regarding Wike’s failure to name his preferred presidential candidate, Nwibubasa asserted that this reflects the governor’s lack of integrity. He stated, “His inability to name his preferred candidate as publicly announced in January is a pointer to his level of instability and incoherence.” Nwibubasa lamented the situation, expressing disappointment that Rivers has a governor who does not align his words with his actions. He concluded by expressing confidence in the PDP’s presidential candidate, asserting that the people of Rivers are supportive and will vote for him en masse on February 25, 2023.
