On the floor of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, alleged that the ongoing street protests against the increasing cost of living in the country are backed by sponsors. He highlighted the legislative and federal government’s efforts to address the situation and emphasized the lack of awareness among the protestors. Akpabio also emphasized the disbursement of additional funds to state governments to alleviate the food situation, which he expects to benefit the citizens.

However, his remarks triggered backlash from various quarters. Some criticized Akpabio for his alleged insensitivity and condescending attitude towards the populace’s plight. Deji Adeyanju, the convener of Concerned Nigerians, labeled Akpabio as delusional and out of touch with the reality on the ground. Other social media users also expressed their discontent with Akpabio’s assertion, claiming that he is detached from the suffering of the people.

The accusations and subsequent reactions indicate a growing divide between the political class and the general population, raising concerns about the government’s responsiveness to the citizens’ needs in the face of economic challenges.
