Expert warns Nigerians against negative messages, urges all to protect country's reputation

A Public Relations expert has cautioned Nigerians against spreading negative messages, emphasizing that a country’s reputation is crucial for its development. Adetokunbo Modupe, founder and chief consultant of TPT International Limited, made this statement at the 2025 Annual Colloquium of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The colloquium, themed “Leadership and Reputation: The Role of Public Relations in Building Trust in Nigeria,” highlighted the importance of reputation in national progress.

Modupe stressed that building the nation’s reputation is a collective responsibility that requires the effort of both leaders and citizens. He noted that the perception of a country directly influences the value placed on its people, citing the way Nigerians are treated abroad as a reflection of Nigeria’s reputation. He urged leaders to restore credibility through truth, fairness, and service, warning that corruption and a disregard for values undermine democratic growth. While data show that global perception of Nigeria is currently negative, Modupe acknowledged that there are also positive aspects to the country’s reputation.

Dr. Ike Neliaku, National President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, represented by Tope Adaramola, highlighted the role of public relations in fostering trust. Neliaku said that genuine communication, consistent messaging, reputation management, crisis communication, and storytelling are essential to establishing trust, and he reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the institute as a formidable institution in Nigeria.

Chairman of the occasion, Oladipupo Adebutu, identified reputation and leadership as crucial factors in a nation’s development. He observed that Nigeria’s major challenge remains leadership rooted in weak values and a loss of reputation, stressing that no nation can progress when integrity and conscience are abandoned.

Mrs. Oluwaseun Boye, Ogun State Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, emphasized that nation‑building is a shared responsibility requiring leaders, institutions, and citizens to uphold ethical values and transparency. She asserted that public relations must build trust through genuine, consistent communication, reputation management, and strategic stakeholder engagement.

The colloquium’s discussion reinforced the significance of reputation and leadership in Nigeria’s development. As the country continues to face challenges related to leadership and reputation, the need for collective effort and authentic communication in building trust and fostering positive relationships cannot be overstated.
