Men of the Ogun State Police Command arrested 46‑year‑old Hassan Azeez three months after he allegedly poured petrol on his wife, Olayinka Hassan, and set her ablaze. According to police, the suspect attacked his wife in October of last year because she failed to prepare his food on time, then fled to the Benin Republic.
The arrest followed a report lodged at Ibogun Divisional Headquarters by the victim’s father. The Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the father reported on 22 October 2022 that his daughter, a mother of one, had been set on fire over a minor disagreement and was rushed to a hospital in Ibadan. Upon receiving the report, DPO Ibogun Division CSP Samuel Oladele mobilised his men and proceeded to the scene, but the suspect had already escaped. Police operatives continued to pursue him until 22 January, when he was finally apprehended.
During interrogation, the suspect, who claimed to have fled to Benin Republic, confessed to the crime but blamed “the devil.” He said he had asked his wife to prepare food, but she was busy washing clothes—his own clothes—when he became annoyed by hunger. The irritation, he claimed, led him to pour petrol on her and set her on fire.
Oyeyemi added that Commissioner of Police Lanre Bankole ordered the suspect’s transfer to the homicide section of the state Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.
