Buhari, Jonathan, others to attend Amechi’s tribute

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is expected to attend the ‘Day of Tribute’, which is part of the activities for the funeral of elder statesman and First Republic politician, Mbazulike Amechi.

Also expected at the event is the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, former President Goodluck Jonathan, who is to serve as the chairman of the occasion, while the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, had been penciled down as the special guests of honour.

The ‘Day of Tribute’ for the First Republic Minister of Aviation would also host the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

Amechi, who was also a First Republic lawmaker, died on November 1, 2022, is to be buried on February 16, 2023 at Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

According to a release made available to journalists in Abuja, “The National Planning Committee for Funeral of the late Amechi has Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu as Chairman and CID Maduabum as Secretary.

“The committee also has organised a similar ‘Day of Tribute’ at the International Convention Centre, Awka, Anambra State, for the late nationalist, on Tuesday, February 14, 2023.”

It further stated that “a 39-member state organising committee of eminent personalities has also been constituted in Anambra State to assist the National Planning Committee in organising a befitting funeral for the late Amechi with Innocent Chukwuma, as Chairman and Maja Umeh as co-Chairman.”
