A newborn baby, rescued from earthquake‑damaged rubble in Syria after its mother died giving birth, is shown in an undated photo provided by local activists (photo credit: CBS News). The tragic scene unfolded in Aleppo, where a pregnant woman became trapped under a collapsed building following Monday morning’s quake. She succeeded in delivering her child, but she did not survive the collapse. Rescue workers later retrieved the newborn, as captured in a video circulating on social media.
The dramatic rescue occurred just hours after a Syrian volunteer organization posted footage of a young child being pulled alive from the earthquake debris in the village of Qatma. The 7.8‑magnitude earthquake that struck parts of Turkey and Syria has caused widespread devastation. The World Health Organization reports that 1.4 million children out of a total of 23 million people are now at risk of exposure to the disaster’s effects.
On Tuesday morning, Turkey’s vice‑president, Fuat Oktay, announced that 3,419 people had been killed in Turkey, with another 20,534 injured. In Syria, confirmed deaths have risen to 1,602, bringing the combined death toll in both countries to 5,021. Turkey’s disaster management agency also reported that 11,342 buildings have collapsed, of which 5,775 have been confirmed.
