Death Toll in Congo Rises to Over 80 Amid Escalating Violence

The death toll in eastern Congo has risen to over 80 since June 4, according to a Congolese army spokesman. The region, which has been plagued by armed violence for decades, is home to nearly 7 million displaced people.

The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), now aligned with the so-called Islamic State group, have intensified their attacks, further destabilizing the area. Among the recent assaults was a deadly attack in Masawu that killed 17 people, with additional bodies found in nearby villages.

The ADF’s increased violence is exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation in the region. Efforts to combat the militant group and restore peace are ongoing, but the persistent instability continues to take a heavy toll on the local population.
