Kenyan Protesters Demand Ruto’s Resignation, Businesses Shut Down in Nairobi
Violent clashes erupted in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, on Thursday as protesters calling for President William Ruto’s resignation faced off against police. Despite the president’s recent concessions, including scrapping planned tax hikes and appointing opposition members to his cabinet, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets demanding more significant reforms.
The protests, organized by activists unhappy with Ruto’s leadership, began in June with a focus on opposing a controversial finance bill. Since then, more than 50 people have lost their lives, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights. However, on Thursday, major towns and cities across the country remained calm, with some residents opting not to participate in the protests due to the cabinet reshuffle.
Businesses in Nairobi were forced to close, and public transport vehicles remained out of operation in the central business district. Nicole Awuori, a protester, explained her motivation, saying, "I am protesting for the people who have missed out on so many opportunities because of broken systems… for the people we lost during the march, who were asking the government for accountability."
President Ruto has condemned the protests, urging Kenyans to stay away from the demonstrations. He has also announced that he will not seek re-election in 2027, giving opponents an opportunity to run against him.
The ongoing crisis in Kenya highlights the persistent demand for change and accountability from the ruling government. As the situation continues to unfold, international observers will be monitoring the situation closely, seeking signs of a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
