A teenager received a two‑year suspended prison sentence in Germany on Friday for planning a deadly attack on his school, a court spokeswoman said. The 17‑year‑old was found guilty of plotting a serious act of violence that endangered the state, according to the higher regional court in Düsseldorf.
German prosecutors had previously reported that the teenager, identified as Jeremy R., intended a “right‑wing extremist‑motivated attack” for May 13, 2022. The massacre, which would have involved explosives and various weapons, was narrowly averted when he was arrested the day before. Prosecutors said the plan aimed to kill teachers and a large number of pupils.
At the time of his arrest, Jeremy R. was 16. He had allegedly obtained the materials needed to assemble pipe bombs and researched bomb‑making instructions online. In addition, he had gathered weapons such as knives, brass knuckles, machetes, crossbows, arrows, and firearms. School shootings are relatively rare in Germany, which enforces some of the strictest gun laws in Europe.
