Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun announced on Friday that his administration will begin distributing food items to residents as part of efforts to ease the hardships caused by fuel shortages and the introduction of new naira notes. He explained that the initiative became necessary after prolonged fuel and cash crises made daily life unbearable for many people.

Speaking to journalists in Abeokuta, the state capital, the governor said, “As a responsible administration, despite the challenges and the delay in resolving them, we have decided to provide direct palliatives to poor and vulnerable citizens across the length and breadth of the state. We will distribute the first phase of 400,000 food items through our social investment officers in each LGA, starting this weekend.”

Governor Abiodun also warned that any bank found hoarding the new naira notes would be treated as an economic saboteur. “The government will treat erring banks and bankers as economic saboteurs and will not hesitate to wield the big stick,” he said.

He urged the state’s youths to avoid violent protests, adding, “Necessary measures are being taken, and in the next few days you will see concrete manifestations of the relief being sought.”
