EPL: Real reason VAR didn’t award Chelsea penalty against West Ham – Ex-referee Watson

It has been revealed why Referee Robert Jones ignored Chelsea’s call for a penalty in the dying embers of the West Ham clash.

Conor Gallagher’s effort from just outside the box was blocked by Tomas Soucek, who dived like a goalkeeper as he tried to block the ball.

Chelsea players surrounded the referee as they pleaded for a spot-kick.

The video assistant referee team led by David Coote and Nick Smith was consulted but nothing was given.

Speaking to BT Sport, ‘referee expert’ Peter Walton said: “Well when Soucek goes down there, you can clearly see his arm go down.

“Is his arm down there to prevent him from hitting the ground or is his arm there to block the ball? My opinion is if it hasn’t been given he’s got away with it, I think that’s a penalty kick.”
