Naira Takes a Tumble Against the Dollar in Fresh Start to the Week
In a gloomy opening to the week, the naira fell sharply against the US dollar on Monday, depreciating to a record low. According to FMDQ data, the currency traded at N1579.22 per dollar, marking a significant drop from N1,564.48 last Friday.
The devastating loss amounts to N14.74 per dollar, sending shockwaves through the foreign exchange market. To make matters worse, the naira’s value continued to deteriorate on the black market, where it exchanged hands at N1610 per dollar on Monday, down from N1600 last Friday.
Foreign exchange transaction turnover remained relatively stable at $162.99 million on Monday, failing to stem the tide of naira’s decline. This marks a fresh setback for the Nigerian currency, which has struggled to maintain its value against the dollar in recent weeks.
Notably, the naira’s downward trend extends a disappointing streak, following a negative closing last week despite a drop in Nigeria’s inflation rate to 33.90 per cent in July 2024.
As the week unfolds, the impact of this currency decline on businesses and consumers in Nigeria will be keenly watched. The news serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the country’s economy, particularly with regards to currency management.
