The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the defection of 17 Rivers State House of Assembly members to the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling it a mockery of the legislative arm of government. PDP National Publicity Secretary Comrade Ini Ememobong said the lawmakers were acting on behalf of their “demigod and paymasters.”
The defections took place on Friday and were led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, who announced the move during a plenary session. Amaewhule attributed the decision to factionalisation within the PDP, stating that he had formally notified his ward chairman of his exit from the party and had subsequently joined the APC.
The PDP denounced the lawmakers’ actions, warning that they would be remembered as “enemies of democracy” who have ridiculed the legislature. The party noted that this is not the first time these legislators have switched parties, having done so previously and later recanted.
The Rivers State House of Assembly comprises 32 members, with the PDP holding a majority before the defections. The APC welcomed the newcomers, viewing the shift as a boost to its presence in the state.
The development is seen as a significant moment in Nigerian politics, especially ahead of future elections, and has drawn considerable attention to the political landscape of Rivers State. As the environment continues to evolve, the actions of the defected lawmakers are likely to have substantial implications for the state’s governance and the broader political scene in Nigeria.
