Presidents Cup Teams Take Shape as Automatic Qualification Period Concludes

The Presidents Cup teams are halfway built, with the automatic qualification period for both the United States and International teams coming to a close on Sunday afternoon following the BMW Championship. The top six golfers on each side, based on their FedEx Cup standings or Official World Golf Rankings, have earned automatic bids to their respective teams.

Scottie Scheffler led the way for the United States, winning six times on Tour this season and claiming a gold medal at the Olympics earlier this month. He’ll start the Tour Championship at 10-under with a two-shot advantage. Xander Schauffele finished second for the United States, with two major championships wins this season, including the PGA Championship and the British Open.

Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, and Sahith Theegala completed the top six automatic selections for the United States.

On the international side, Hideki Matsuyama led the way, winning twice on Tour this season, including at the FedEx St. Jude Championship to start the playoffs. South Korean golfers Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, and Ben An, as well as Australians Jason Day and Adam Scott, also earned automatic spots.

The two team captains, Jim Furyk and Mike Weir, will announce their captain’s picks on September 3, completing the 12-man teams. The Presidents Cup is set to take place from September 26 to October 1 at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, Canada. The biennial competition pits American golfers against non-European international golfers, with the United States team holding a 12-1-1 all-time record, including nine consecutive wins.
