Wike’s Threat Sparks Calls for Sanction in PDP
A group of supporters of Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed Vanguard (BAM-V), has called for the sanction of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his threat to destabilise some Peoples Democratic Party-controlled states.
Wike made the threat last Saturday at the PDP congress in Port Harcourt, stating that he would cause a political crisis in the state of any governor who threatens his political structure in Rivers State. However, the BAM-V group has dismissed Wike’s threat as reckless and indecorous, and has called on the PDP leadership to sanction him for his anti-party activities.
In a statement signed by its Director-General, Mohammed Jibo, the group expressed support for the PDP’s decision to summon Wike and urged the party leadership to do more than invite him to appear before the disciplinary committee. Instead, they called for Wike to be suspended or expelled from the party before he causes further harm.
Wike’s threat is seen as a major blow to the PDP’s unity and stability, and BAM-V has warned him not to cause any turmoil in Bauchi State, which it described as the most peaceful state in the North-East zone. The group also praised Governor Bala Mohammed-led PDP Governors’ Forum for its stance on ensuring that PDP structure is returned to the Rivers State governor.
The statement read in part, "It becomes imperative in view of Wike’s several anti-party activities, including his openly working against PDP in the 2023 presidential election, which contributed to the loss of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, in the election."
BAM-V also accused Wike of being a member of the APC, the party he supported in the 2023 presidential election, and called on the party leadership to take action to prevent further harm.
"PDP as a political party is bigger than any individual, no matter how highly placed such person may be. We strongly believe that the party’s founding fathers had never intended for it to become a tool of manipulation by any member of the PDP. We boldly say that Wike’s excess is too much and cannot be continuously tolerated any further," the statement concluded.
The BAM-V group’s call for Wike’s sanction has sparked a heated debate within the PDP, with some members calling for the minister to be suspended or expelled from the party. The controversy is seen as a major test of the party’s unity and stability ahead of the 2027 general election.
